Philippe Set to Secure Top-Five Championship Finish at Mexican Finale
Making History: Philippe wrote a new chapter in the Champ Car history books when he became the youngest driver ever to compete in the series in 2004. Along with the young age, came the lack of experience Philippe had at the time. Prior to his first race in 2004 at the age of 17, he had only 12 races in RACECARS under his belt! Other than the 12 races, all of his prior experience came from competing in go-karts. Philippe wrote another chapter two weeks ago, when at the age of 20 years, two months and 29 days, he became the youngest driver in the 98-year history of the sport to WIN a Champ Car race.
4th in the Championship: Philippe has enjoyed a tight points battle this season with Paul Tracy for fourth place in the series championship. Philippe expanded the gap to six points with his recent victory over the former Champion. With the recent announcement of Tracy's withdrawal from the season finale due to injury, Philippe looks to be in good shape for the coveted championship position, as Mario Dominguez is 17 points behind in the sixth position.
Outstanding Season: Since making his debut with CTE HVM in April, Nelson Philippe has earned six top-five finishes, including two podiums and his first victory.
Greg Moore Legacy Award: Nelson Philippe is a nominee for the Greg Moore Legacy Award. The honor goes to the driver who most typifies Moore's distinctive combination of outstanding on track talent and dynamic personality, and nominees are chose by a select board from the Champ Car World Series as well as with fan and media voting.
Nations Cup: With two Frenchman in the top-five in the series championship, Nelson Philippe and three-time, Champ Car Champion Sebastien Bourdais have once again secured the Nations Cup for France.
Nelson Philippe: "I don't want the season to end! This has been the best year of my young career and I can't believe we're already at the last race! The whole team is obviously pumped after the victory in Surfer's and all we want to do is end the season with another bang. I have to say that the team did an outstanding job all year and without them, I wouldn't be here today. So, thank you so much guys! I've been in Mexico since Friday doing media to promote the race, seeing friends and for me it is like a real homecoming. Once again, I will be wearing my helmet with the Mexico colors to show my appreciation to the Mexican public. Everybody is very excited about the race and the fans are really pumped to see us go around the "Peraltada" again. I am disappointed that my main competition for 4th in the standings is not going to be racing with me to the end but I truly wish Paul (Tracy) a speedy recovery. I will stay off my golf cart at the track this weekend in his honor!"
