Justin disappointed with P5 on Mexico grid
After their promising pace in Friday qualifying, Justin and the #9 CDW/RuSPORT team were disappointed to line up 5th on the grid for Sunday's Gran Premio Tecate Presented by Banamex in Mexico City. Will Power took pole for Team Australia with a new lap record of 1m 23.558s (119.515 mph).
Justin was P4 on the timesheets in Saturday morning's practice session and his best time in final qualifying (1m 24.365s, 118.371 mph) was also 4th quickest. But a slower Sebastien Bourdais had earned a front row grid slot with Friday's provisional pole, so the Newman/Haas/Lanigan driver starts from P2, relegating Justin to P5.
"The car wasn't as smooth as yesterday", lamented Justin. "As the track got better, we weren't able to keep up with it and it cost us the pole. It was also hard finding a gap in the traffic when the tyres were at their best".
The final qualifying result throws the spotlight back onto Justin's battle with Robert Doornbos (Minardi Team USA) for runner up spot in the driver championship. Doornbos qualified 3rd for Sunday's race and starts immediately in front of Justin on the grid. Justin was unhappy with the Dutchman's driving during qualifying. "We were all trying to get ourselves a bit of space out there", he explained. "Doornbos backed out of it half way through the lap which ruined Sebastien's lap and didn't help mine either."
Justin has an 8 point advantage over Doornbos, but will be taking nothing for granted. "We're obviously disappointed that we can't be at the front", Justin concluded. "Now we have to concentrate on making the car good for the race tomorrow and hope for a good result."
Tomorrow's race starts at 1pm local time (2pm ET, or 7pm in the UK). Fans in the UK can follow the race live on Eurosport 2, with pre-race coverage from 6.30pm. Live timing and scoring is also available at www.champcar.ws.
