Fourth in Mexico City: Justin ends season on positive note
Justin Wilson and his Mi-Jack Conquest Racing team ended their 2004 Champ Car campaign in fourth, their best result of the season, after 63 laps of Mexico City's Aut0x00e2dromo Hermanos Rodr0x00e0guez. Justin was at the sharp end of the timesheets all weekend, posting superb qualifying performances on both Friday and Saturday qualifying and lining up third for the race. He was pleased to finish the season with a strong result though disappointed to have missed out on third place.
At the green flag the field made it through Turn 1 largely intact and Justin slotted into third behind Bruno Junqueira and polesitter Sebastien Bourdais. He kept in touch with the leaders during the early laps, and it looked as if Justin could at least look forward to his season's first podium. But the Briton's fortunes took a knock when A.J. Allmendinger short-fuelled at the first pit-stops allowing the American to leapfrog into third.
Wilson fought a hard middle stint, but his second set of option tyres weren't as well balanced and he lost further time trying to lap a fuel-heavy but wide Roberto Gonzalez in the run up to the final stops on lap 49. Though his pit crew got him away again in only 7.6 seconds, Justin rejoined about 7 seconds down on Allmendinger. He set about closing the gap, posting the fourth fastest race lap on Lap 52 as he hustled the car ever closer, but the chequered flag came too soon.
"Up until the first pit stop we seemed pretty good, but after the first round of pit stops AJ had jumped in front of us," said Wilson. "He was pretty quick from there and we had nothing to answer to that, as for some reason our second set of option tyres had a lot of understeer. I was pushing every lap like it was qualifying, but at the end of our stint I caught a lapped back marker and lost several seconds. The last set of tyres on the final stint were much better and I was able to close the gap considerably. Unfortunately we just ran out of laps in the end. It's a bit disappointing, as we were hoping to put the Mi-Jack car up on the podium to finish out the season, but it was still a very competitive weekend for us."
