Herdez Competition rookie driver Mario Dominguez started in his best position of the year today at his home race in front of the tens of thousands of fans that filled the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Unfortunately, a suspension failure forced him out of the race on lap 16.
Mario Domínguez - Driver
"Today was, in one way, a real high point in my career - all of these thousands of fans cheering all around this beautiful track. I could feel them riding with me in the car and spurring me on. But it was also a huge disappointment. After qualifying in ninth and making it to seventh in the first lap, to have the suspension break like that... well, it's very hard. I do still feel lucky though because it broke on the front straight. I feel the worst for all of the fans. We had a legitimate shot at a top six finish today and I feel so bad that we let them down."
Keith Wiggins - Managing Director
"We're hugely disappointed. We had a Lola part failure despite it being the latest specification piece. While it's very unusual, it is something that needs to be investigated with Lola. We are very disappointed for Herdez and all of our other sponsors based here in Mexico - but especially for Mario because he did such a great job all weekend."
* This was Domínguez's best qualifying effort of the year, surpassing his previous best of 12th at Parque Fundidora in Monterrey, Mexico and Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California.
* Domínguez finishes the season in 18th position in the series Championship with 37 points. He has locked up the Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year Award competition by a margin of 18 points.
Next Friday, November 22, 2002, Mario will attend the CART season-ending Awards Banquet in Miami, Florida. While there, he will be presented with the Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year award for the 2002 season.
