Bridgestone Pole Qualifying Round 1
Sebastien Bourdais #1 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"It is hard to say how much of the time we made up on the second run was due to the tires or due to the track, but it certainly was faster. I think we have the Newman/Haas team has given me a great car here and we should have a great shot for the pole tomorrow."
Justin Wilson #9 CDW Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
The wrist was bothering me, but once you get in the car and the engine fires, you block out the pain and go for it. We have a good car as well, and I expect that both Ryan (Briscoe) and myself will have a shot for pole tomorrow."
Will Power #5 Aussie Vineyards Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"Until the lead up to the Australian race we had not done much testing. We did a shaker-rig test and that obviously helped up us a lot, so we decided to do the same in the lead-up to this race. It is good to race another track for the second time. You just save so much time and your tires when you go out on a track where you know your way around. This is my style of track. It's more of a European style which is fast and flowing. To be honest I have not thought a lot about the Rookie of the Year after we had such a good run in Australia. Our aim is to finish on the podium this weekend. I think the Team Australia crew really deserves that after all the work this year. At the same time, the Rookie title was our goal at the beginning of the year and we have the chance to wrap that up this weekend, so we won't be doing anything stupid. Everything has really come together at the end of the year for me and the team."
Bruno Junqueira #2 Hole in the Wall Ford-Cosworth/Bridgestone/Lola/Bridgestone
"I didn't push as much as I could have in the first two turns on my fastest lap so I know I can get more out of the car. I only got one fast lap on the second stint on the Bridgestone reds, that were really good. I caught up to Oriol and had to back off so I could build a gap. Then I went full speed again and he (Oriol) had made a mistake so I caught up to him again. I think I can improve my time tomorrow. I'm not far off the guys in front of me so if we can continue to improve the car I think we have a shot at it."
Oriol Servia #6 Gulfstream Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"Realistically, the Gulfstream -- PKV Racing car was the same as it was this morning. We were third fastest this morning, but one second off the fastest car. In qualifying we were one second off the top two guys, but we were position six. It's just two other guys got faster than us, but the distance to the front is the same, so we made the same progress as they did. The Gulfstream -- PKV Racing team just needs to catch up a little more than the guys at the front during final qualifying tomorrow."
Nelson Philippe #4 CTE Racing HVM Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"Coming into the weekend, we knew this was a difficult track, in terms of car setup. Seventh position isn't a bad result, but it's not where we want to be. We have to go back and look at the data to see where we're losing time. The car is really unstable, and it's hard to go quick right now, but the team and I will work hard overnight to improve tomorrow, and I'm confident that we we'll be quicker."
David Martinez #3 Indeck Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"It was just an incredible day, I'm very happy! The Forsythe Team gave me a great car and I was just pushing a little more every lap, on my last qualifying lap I just decided to go all out and put in a flyer and it paid off. During morning practice we had a problem with the gearing so we were loosing tons of time coming out of the chicane, but the Team fixed it and we just improved the car throughout the day and managed to put in a great result. I wasn't really expecting to get into the top 10 until tomorrow so getting over that hurdle today is a great confidence boost. The competition out there is very tough, but I know that I'm still the one that has the most room for improvement so I'm very confident that tomorrow we'll be able to give Telmex and the Mexican fans another great result."
Andrew Ranger #27 Wal-mart/Tide Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"After seeing how the car was in practice this morning I was confident going into qualifying because the car was really good. I did however think we would have been better than ninth but the field is really close so hopefully it will not rain tomorrow and we will be able to move up."
Mario Dominguez #8 Pemex/GICSA/Del Valle Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"Well I am not too happy with a tenth place start, but I definitely feel that we have something to work with. I feel that there is room for improvement on the #8 Pemex/GICSA/Del Valle car and that we will have a car that is faster tomorrow. I am so happy with all the support that Mexico has shown me today, and I am will try very hard to qualifying well tomorrow for them and my sponsors especially Pemex, GICSA, Del Valle, Telmex, and Bridgestone."
Jan Heylen #11 The Meurmans Car Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"Qualifying went well considering the car we had. In this morning's practice session the car was not handling well. We worked on it and it got a lot better in qualifying. I am sure we can work on it some more and improve it for tomorrow's qualifying session. We were less than two-tenths from moving up into the top nine and that is my goal for tomorrow."
Charles Zwolsman #34 Mi-Jack Conquest Racing Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"It seemed that in the beginning of the stints the tires were pretty good so you had to be on it in the first couple of laps. We made some good improvements before going out for our last stint. There was a lot more in the car than 12th position but on my second fast lap there were a couple of cars in front of me so I had to back off a little bit, and I missed out on the best part of the tires. But overall I'm pretty confident we can come back tomorrow and qualify in the top-10."
Buddy Rice #7 Indeck Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"Overall it was a good day, the car is getting faster and faster but unfortunately we ran out of time during qualifying and weren't able to get the most out of the red tires. There is a very fine line for the tires, you have to be able to put in a flyer as soon as they are at their peak because after that they fall off quite a bit. But we know there's a lot more speed in the car and I'm really gelling with the team so tomorrow we should be able to get a much better result. It just feels great to be back in a race car and I'm really enjoying my time with the Forsythe Team."
Alex Tagliani #15 Aussie Vineyards Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"In the beginning for pre-qualifying the car was a little bit loose so we went back to what we had in this morning's practice which wasn't the answer, but on Bridgestone black tires we were ok right away, about P6 and then most of the field put on the Bridgestone red tires they gained and we stayed on the Bridgestone blacks. Hopefully it won't rain tomorrow because we have two sets of Bridgestone reds to run.
Dan Clarke #14 CTE Racing HVM Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"We weren't able to do many laps in this morning's practice session, and that was my fault. I really gained some good experience with the track in the pre-qualifying session this afternoon, and things went a lot better. But before qualifying started, we realized we needed to change an upright on the car's suspension, so we had to give up a qualifying stint and try to work things out in only one stint. After we did a couple of fast laps, the tires went away. So, I haven't had as much experience with the track as I want to, but I felt more positive with the driving as the session went on. I was able to gain some time and I'm feeling comfortable on the track, even though this is my first time here. I'm disappointed overall, but we'll keep working on it tonight, and we'll figure out how to be quicker tomorrow."
Antonio Pizzonia #18 Lexington Energy Services Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"I am still working on learning the track. This is my first time here, so that takes a little time. I ran into some traffic during qualifying, and I never really had a good run this afternoon to get a better result. We will sit down and work on things tonight with the hopes of having a good #8 Lexington Energy Services car for tomorrow's final qualifying session."
Katherine Legge #20 Bell Micro Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"The Bell Micro -- PKV Racing team gambled a bit in qualifying today. We were one of the few teams not to run on the red (alternate) tires in qualifying gambling that we will be able to use them tomorrow. Everybody else ran reds thinking it might rain tomorrow. When you are in the middle of the grid you might as well take a gamble, which is what we did. We reckon the reds are a least a half second faster than the primary (black) tires, so we are not worried. We just tired to work on the car and sacrifice today and hope that the gamble pays off and we can make a bigger gain then everyone else tomorrow."
Andreas Wirth #19 Sonny's Bar-B-Q Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone
"In the first practice session we had a little too much understeer. We made some changes, but it did not effect the car like we planned. It made it worse than before. We did not run We will try to figure it out for tomorrow.
