ROOKIE MARIO DOMINGUEZ QUALIFIES A SEASON-BEST 9TH:
Team Rahal driver Jimmy Vasser will start fifth in tomorrow's Gran Premio Telmex-Gigante in Mexico City. Provisional polesitter Bruno Junquiera claimed pole position, while Christian Fittipaldi qualified second and Dario Franchitti qualified third. Herdez Competition driver Mario Dominguez gave his hometown fans a thrill as he qualified a season- and career-best ninth on the starting grid.
JIMMY VASSER (#8 Shell Ford) - Qualified 5th
"The engine blew during the test session before qualifying and instead of risking yesterday's time we waited. When we saw that not too many guys were going faster than they did yesterday we decided to not go out and it turned out to be the right decision. We're still starting fifth and that's a pretty good place to be."
PATRICK CARPENTIER (#32 Player's/Indeck Ford) - Qualified 7th
BRUNO JUNQUIERA WON POLE POSITION. "Today, again? That's too bad. It's a long race so we'll see what happens. That's very disappointing especially today since we didn't even have a qualifying session."
WHY WAS THE TRACK SLOWER TODAY? "We need to run to make it faster, and we would've been faster but for us on every lap we came in was faster than the lap before. At the end I think we could've been faster than yesterday but we just had two laps and then we came in, and two laps and then we came in and the tires couldn't come up to pressure. At this place it's pretty important down the back because you have all the essess at high speed and the car is a little bit loose when the tires aren't up to pressure."
BUT THERE'S LOTS OF PASSING ROOM FOR THE RACE TOMORROW. "It should be good. I had a good battle there with (Cristiano) da Matta trying to get up to speed and we ran side-by-side so we'll see what happens. Anywhere it's tough to pass and I expect the same here, but starting seventh is pretty good."
MARIO DOMINGUEZ (#55 Herdez Competition Ford) - Qualified 9th
"That was my best qualifying effort of the year and we achieved the top 10 goal we set for this race. The track was slower so I'm very happy that we were able to go faster than yesterday and it's a very, very good starting position for the team and tomorrow we'll just have to have good pit stops and be quick all day. I have to thank Ford because I had to borrow an engine from one of the other teams and it was a big help."
YOU'VE HAD AN UP-AND-DOWN SEASON BUT YOU'VE TURNED IN YOUR BEST QUALIFYING EFFORT OF THE SEASON IN YOUR HOMETOWN RACE. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU? "It means the world. You saw that I qualified ninth and the people are cheering like I qualified on pole, so it means a lot to me. It's my first year and I have a lot to learn still, but if I can do a good job tomorrow it make a lot of people happy, including me."
ALEX TAGLIANI (#33 Player's/Indeck Ford) - Qualified 14th
NOT A GREAT QUALIFYING SESSION FROM SEVERAL POINTS OF VIEW. "No, I think it's disappointing because we finally got the setup working a little bit better for us. We came into the pits, made a few changes, went out and did one lap and matched our best lap that we did yesterday. We had three or four more laps to go but we never had the chance to do them. We came in, went out, came in, went out and that was it, it was over. I'm a little more optimistic because I finally got the car a little bit better for today so that's a good thing. Tomorrow it's a long race and starting in the back you can draft people down the long front straightaway. The race is 73 laps, 211 miles with three pit stops and all it takes is a couple of people to go out with blown engines or spinning off and anything can happen. We're not going to give up until the end."
MICHEL JOURDAIN, JR. (#9 Gigante Ford) - Qualified 17th
"It was a very, very tough day. We had problems with the primary car so we switched to the backup and tried to get a couple of fast laps in. Unfortunately we were only able to get one fast lap in because of all the red flags and we have to start from the back."
