CHAMPCAR/CART: Mexico City: American Spirit TJ Friday report
JIMMY VASSER, ...
JIMMY VASSER, #12 American Spirit/Ford-Reynard/Cosworth
Vasser under the weather yet earns his best qualifying result of 2003, Hunter-Reay sixth quick in his Mexico City debut, best combined qualifying effort of 2003 for American Spirit
Jimmy Vasser on the day: "The car felt pretty good. We went one way with the set-up on the #12 side and the #31 crew went another. I think we have found the better set-up. I have been feeling a little sick today, I am not sure if it is the altitude or a stomach bug, but I am not going to let that slow me down. I am not happy at all with our position in the championship standings at the moment, so I am going to be giving it one heck of a fight these last three races. We are coming of a decent finish in Miami, I like it here, it is a fantastic facility and the Mexican fans have a ton of energy, they really support us, I plan to run up front all weekend."
RYAN HUNTER-REAY, #31 Gonher de Mexico/Ford-Reynard/Cosworth
"We went the opposite direction from Jimmy's side with the set-up today. That is the benefit of a two-car team, we are working together to find the optimum set-up. I am on my second race with my new engineer, David Brown. His communication is fantastic and we are really starting to gel. The two cars are very different at this point, yet we are only one tenth apart, that is interesting. It is great to have the Gonher car in the top-six and I hope to take it to the front tomorrow in final qualifying."
Stefan Johansson, Team Owner: "Fourth and sixth is a great result for us here today. It is the best combined result for us this year in qualifying. Both drivers had a clean run this afternoon and our engineers Ed Nathman and David Brown put together a very good set-up after a frustrating morning session. This is Ryan's first time running here, it is exciting for us to have the Gonher de Mexico car in the top-six, he did a great job. Hopefully Jimmy will be feeling better tomorrow, but it doesn't seem as though it cost him anytime today, he's a fighter."
