Mercedes Super 9 ATP Tour Tennis and CART FedEx Championship Series Feature Two Weeks of Mercedes-Benz Sports in South Florida

MONTVALE, N.J. (March 2, 1999) -- Mercedes Speedweeks will feature cars racing at more than 200 mph and tennis balls being smashed at more than 120 mph during two weeks of Mercedes-Benz sporting events March 15-28 in Miami. Mercedes-Benz supplies racing engines to five teams and seven drivers in the CART FedEx Championship Series, which kicks off the 1999 season at the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami at the Homestead Motorsports Complex March 19-21. Meanwhile, the second Mercedes Super 9 tournament on the ATP Tour will feature the top names in men's professional tennis during The Lipton at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park March 15-28. "This is the first time Mercedes has had the opportunity to feature two of its sports marketing programs in the same city at the same time," said Joe Eberhardt, vice president of marketing for Mercedes-Benz of North America. "We'll have some of the top names in men's tennis at the race track during the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami, and we will have some of our Champ car drivers at The Lipton as well," said Eberhardt. "Our involvement in tennis and motor sports is all about speed, performance and fun, which are the same qualities that go into our production automobiles," said Eberhardt. "Mercedes Speedweeks is a unique opportunity to showcase these qualities." The CART FedEx Championship Series is a 20-race series based in North America, with stops in Australia, Brazil and Japan along the way. The series visits superspeedways, short ovals, purpose-built road courses and temporary street courses, resulting in the truest test of driver, team and machinery in all of motor sports. Player's/Forsythe Racing driver Greg Moore used Mercedes-Benz power in capturing the pole position for this event last year. Meanwhile, Player's/Forsythe Racing teammates Patrick Carpentier and Moore were the two quickest drivers during three days of testing during CART Spring Training at Homestead in February. The Mercedes Super 9 are nine tournaments among the richest and most prestigious on the ATP Tour. The Mercedes Super 9 makes three stops in the United States: Indian Wells, Calif.; Key Biscayne, Fla.; and Cincinnati. The international stops on the Mercedes Super 9 trail include Monte Carlo, Monaco, Hamburg, Germany, Rome, Toronto, Stuttgart, Germany, and Paris. Mercedes-Benz also sponsors the PGA TOUR's season-opening Mercedes Championships at Kapalua's Plantation Course in Maui, Hawaii, each January.

The Mercedes Championships features a unique format limited to winners of PGA TOUR official money events from the previous year's play. Each round of the Mercedes Championships will be featured live in prime-time on ESPN Jan. 6-9, 2000.
