Mercedes-Benz Sports Marketing Vehicle Is The Ultimate Mobile Office
MONTVALE, N.J. (June 14, 1999) * With road warriors and at-home workers becoming the norm on the American business landscape, there may be no better example of the perfect satellite office than the new Mercedes-Benz Sports Marketing Vehicle (SMV), the mobile workspace/hospitality trailer that travels the CART FedEx Championship Series circuit. Serving as both a work environment for Mercedes-Benz USA's personnel and media relations staff, and as a hospitality center for journalists and guests, the 53-foot facility is -- like a Mercedes-powered Champ Car -- sleek, stylish and engineered for peak functionality and performance. The SMV was specifically developed to meet the needs of Mercedes' North American sports marketing efforts. Designed by Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design of North America in Irvine, Calif. (MBAD), Mercedes-Benz' automotive design studio, the signature vehicle was built by Marathon Coach of Coburg, Ore. MBAD also designed the exterior graphics and some interior features of a sibling trailer built by High-Tech Trailers of Painesville, Ohio, for the trackside engineers at Ilmor Engineering, Mercedes-Benz's race-engine design and manufacturing partner. "The Mercedes-Benz Sports Marketing Vehicle is more than just a functional workspace for our team when we go racing¯it is truly our nerve center," said Hal Whiteford, vice president of operations for Mercedes-Benz USA. "The SMV is also a symbol of the sporting style of Mercedes-Benz. It sets us apart from the crowd." The exterior design of the SMV features a bold contemporary racing theme to portray the dynamic and emotional aspects of Mercedes-Benz motorsport. The exterior graphics of the Ilmor Engineering trailer incorporate an image of the Mercedes-Benz IC108E engine to convey its owner's emphasis on technology. The fully equipped interior of the Mercedes-Benz SMV incorporates sleek European styling into every functional element. The main office area, where sports marketing personnel, media relations staff and foreign correspondents work each race weekend, features the usual complement of electronic gadgetry and state-of-the-art telecommunications equipment. Satellites feed Mercedes' racing activities -- from live, on-track CART action to West McLaren Mercedes' Formula One activities -- onto two large television monitors. In the lounge, Mercedes sports marketing personnel can transact the business of auto racing with sponsors, or simply entertain guests away from the hot, dusty paddock and pit lane. Form follows function here as well. The wall and floor coverings were selected for noise abatement and textured sophistication; the seating is custom made from butter-soft, yet durable, leather. Whiteford's inner sanctum is the executive's ultimate mobile office, with efficient workspace, conference table and seating. "I have everything I need to conduct day- to-day business when I'm at the race track," said Whiteford.
