Brooklyn, Mich. (July 21, 2000) - Memo Gidley, subbing for regular Della Penna Motorsports driver Norberto Fontana, posted a fast lap of 225.606 mph (31.914 seconds) in the #10 DIRECTV Toyota/Reynard Champ Car during this morning's practice session for the Michigan 500. This afternoon, he posted speeds of 222.862 mph and 220.737 mph in his back-up and primary cars, respectively.
"The car's unbalanced right now," Gidley said. "The combination just isn't right. We had a good session this morning, but got out of sequence with what others were during this afternoon and it cost us quite a bit of time. We ran the backup first and then as we went to dial-in the primary, the yellows interrupted us. By the end of the session when we put on new tires, we'd just run out of time. Once we get the car dialed in though, it won't take long to get the car up to speed."
"It's great to be behind the wheel again," Gidley continued. "It's nice seeing people in the pits on race weekends when I'm not in the car, but this (driving) is what comes natural to me, what I want to do. This weekend, we' re focused on setting up the car for a strong finish. I have good chemistry with the Della Penna Motorsports team and the equipment is there, so it's going to be an exciting weekend for us."
