CART LAUNCHES THE MCI WorldCom MOST POPULAR DRIVER AWARD; ONE LUCKY FAN WILL WIN TRIP TO CALIFORNIA RACE
DETROIT (July 21, 1999) - Fans of Champ Car racing have the opportunity to win a trip for two to the season-ending race at California Speedway and attend the 1999 FedEx Championship Series awards banquet when they enter the "MCI WorldCom Most Popular Driver Award Sweepstakes."
Race fans around the country may enter the sweepstakes, which will name the fans' choice as the Most Popular Driver in the FedEx Championship Series, through September 15. Fans can register their votes on both the CART and MCI WorldCom Internet websites (cart.com or mciracing.com) or by completing the official entry form found in Champ Car magazine, Championship Racing magazine, National Speed Sport News, Racer magazine and all event programs through the September 12 Champ Car event at Laguna Seca.
"This is the first time Champ Car fans have had the opportunity to back their opinions by voting for their favorite drivers," said Carl Cohen, executive vice president of marketing for CART. "The partnership with MCI WorldCom has allowed us to provide a lucky fan with the opportunity to attend the FedEx Championship Series season finale in Fontana, California, as well as to witness the crowning of the new PPG Cup winner at our annual awards banquet the following evening."
Fans participating in the national sweepstakes will receive a chance to win a trip for two to Los Angeles to attend the season-ending Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota on October 31. The trip includes round trip coach airfare for two, three nights' hotel accommodations, mid-size car rental and tickets to the race. The winner will also attend the 1999 FedEx Championship Series awards banquet to present a $25,000 check in the name of the winning driver to the driver's charity of choice.
"MCI WorldCom recognizes that CART has some of the most fascinating motorsports personalities in the world. So what better way to showcase this aspect of CART racing, than to team up with CART and give the fans a chance to vote for the most popular driver of 1999?" said Andy Deas, director of MCI WorldCom Sports Marketing. "We like to develop promotional programs that give fans an experience they can get nowhere else. The key ingredient to this promotion is that one lucky fan will have a chance to go to the CART Banquet and present the 1999 CART Most Popular Driver award to the driver that receives the most votes. They can't get that opportunity anywhere else, except with MCI WorldCom and CART."
