Since joining Team Rahal prior to the 1999 season, Max Papis has been one of the rising bright young stars on the CART circuit. Papis has produced some highlight moments in his 28 races with Team Rahal chief among them being the dramatic and heartbreaking finish at Michigan, his pole winning run at Chicago and his season opening victory at Miami in 2000. While not as dramatic as the aforementioned moments, Papis has compiled an impressive run of results on the road and street courses of CART. In his last 11 street/road course races, when Papis has finished running the race he has posted seven top-five results including three podium results.

"I grew up as a road racer in Italy and to me that is the form of racing that feels the most natural," said Papis. "After last year and the win at Miami a lot of people have been focused on my abilities on the ovals, but I have always felt like I was a road racer first. One of the appeals of CART is that as a driver you must master the road and street courses in addition to the oval tracks. The Miller Lite team has worked very hard on our street racing and we are working our way up the podium. I feel we are now ready to take that final step, the hardest one, to the top of the podium."
