#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard
Papis and the Miller Lite car finished the morning session ninth overall with a fast lap of 75.699 sec./111.568 mph. The majority of the morning session was spent fine tuning the handling of the car and working on the set-up. With the threat of stormy weather looming during the qualifying session, Papis posted a fast lap early in the session than bettered the result later as he claimed the provisional pole at Detroit for the second time in three years. Papis' fast lap of 73.903 sec./114.280 mph, was the fastest lap by nearly four tenths of a second. "Today was very good. The Miller team was the best today. The other guys better go home and find some more speed tonight because we've got a lot. I really enjoy this track. I was up here (on the provisional pole) in '98 with Arciero-Wells Racing and Toyota, but those were different circumstances. Now I've got new partners, and (team owner) Bobby (Rahal)'s given me a really good car."
#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard
Brack and the Shell crew spent the morning session working on the set-up of the Shell car. Brack finished tenth in the morning practice posting his fast lap at 75.362 sec./111.399 mph. In the afternoon qualifying session Brack turned in the third fastest time with a lap of 74.331 sec./113.622 mph. Late in the qualifying session Brack made contact with the tire wall in turn 11. The Shell car sustained some damage but the damage was such that the car can take the track on Saturday. "We've had a pretty good car so far," said Brack. "We spent the morning fine tuning the car but really I came to grips with the car pretty early here. Both Max and I were quick in qualifying. Towards the end I was pushing pretty hard and I crashed. But it wasn't damaged too and I think we'll be able to get it back together for tomorrow. The key is we are in the fast session tomorrow and the track will continue to improve."
