FORT WORTH-DALLAS (April 23, 2001) - Racing legend Mario Andretti will serve as the Grand Marshal of the April 29 inaugural Firestone Firehawk 600, presented by Pioneer, at Texas Motor Speedway.
Andretti, who retired from active driving in 1994, is a four-time Champ Car National Champion. He has won the Indianapolis 500 (1969), the Daytona 500 (1967), and numerous other events - 109 in all - over his five-decade career. 's son, Michael, has driven in the CART FedEx Championship Series since 1983.
LOOKS LIKE WE GOT US A CONVOY - The hauler count continues to climb for the Wednesday, April 25, Transporter Parade with a possible 50-60 rigs participating in the 11:00 a.m. trek from Cowboys Arlington to the Texas Motor Speedway. Fans will be able to see the teams' cars on display between 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. The big rigs will then begin loading the cars back into the transporters and prepare for the 11:00 a.m. parade start. The rigs will depart from the parking area of Cowboys Arlington, located at 360 and Abrams, and head north on 360, to Interstate 30 west, to Interstate 35W north to the speedway.
CAN I MAKE A RESERVATION? - Race fans can attend a special dinner with nearly a dozen CART drivers on Thursday, April 26, at the Texas de Brazil restaurant in Fort Worth. Brazilian drivers Cristiano da Matta, Christian Fittipaldi, Max Wilson, Tony Kanaan, Bruno Junqueira, Luiz Garcia Jr., are among those who will attend the dinner. Each fan who attends the dinner will also receive a ticket to the Firestone Firehawk 600 presented by Pioneer. The weekly CART radio show "CART Hotline" will also be broadcast live at the event from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Cost for the event is $38.50 per person.
