Manning and Lavin struggle in Friday qualifying on Long Beach Streets.
Rodolfo Lavin (R) , #5 Corona Competition Team Ford-Cosworth XFE-Reynard-Bridgestone
An engine problem at the end of the first practice session this morning sidelined Lavin during the first 25 minutes of the second morning practice session as the team brought out the second #5 Corona car. Lavin made contact after a spin in Turn 5 in the closing minute of this afternoon's ten minute practice session causing rear suspension damage and preventing him from posting a time during this afternoon's qualifying session.
"I'm definitely starting to get much more comfortable in the car, more so than at the last two races this season, but I've had very bad luck this weekend. First, we have an engine problem and then I kissed the wall exiting Turn 5 in the practice session right before qualifying. The guys are working hard to repair the damage on the car, but we weren't able to get back out in time for qualifying. We'll wait for tomorrow and hope it won't rain so that we can do better."
Darren Manning , (R), #15 Ford-Cosworth XFE-Reynard-Bridgestone
"That session was tough really with traffic. We decided to go out straight away as usual to get a time in the bag. The car was pushing quite a lot and we made a few changes for the second run and went out just before everyone else went out, which was maybe a mistake because when my tires were coming up to temperature, everyone else was coming out of the pits. We're struggling with the car under braking and I made a bit of a mistake during that second run. I went straight on into the back straight, Turn 9 I think it is and that basically spoiled the rest of the run because I had a bit of a flat spot and had dirt all over the tires."
On the Long Beach atmosphere: "It's fantastic. I met Johnny Rotten after qualifying. A bit of a super star out supporting his fellow Brit! It's Friday afternoon and the grandstands are packed. It's a fantastic atmosphere; the fans are great. Just want to do a bit better on the track."
