LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA - Team KOOL Green drivers Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti both ran strong races to come home fourth and sixth respectively in today's running of the Long Beach Grand Prix.
Tracy started 12th and made up eight positions on track through a combination of on-track passes and the reliably quick pit work of the #26 Team KOOL Green pit crew. Combined with his third-place finish in the season opener in Mexico, Tracy is fourth in the championship standings with 26 points.
Franchitti started sixth and finished sixth, thanks to brake problems and an otherwise uneventful race. After two races Franchitti is tied for sixth in the standings with 12 points.
Helio Castroneves won today's 82-lap race by .534 seconds over fellow Brazilian Cristiano da Matta. Third place went to Gil de Ferran.
Da Matta leads the championship standings after two of 21 rounds with 37 points. Castroneves is second with 32 points, while his teammate De Ferran is third in the points with 30.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 12th / Finished 4th / Fourth in championship with 26 points)
"I had a good race. We started kind of far back and there wasn't any strategy that really played out for us. But the car was good. I was able to pass down the straightaway, which a lot of guys couldn't do, and I could brake real deep. I was pretty conservative because Gil (de Ferran) was quick and I really didn't have enough for him. We'll take fourth for Team KOOL Green. It's some good points for us and we'll just keep working on the championship. I locked up the brakes and hit Tags (Alex Tagliani) on the first lap. All I can do is apologize, it's my fault."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(Started 6th / Finished 6th / Sixth in championship with 12 points)
"It was very processional. We had a good start but I couldn't take advantage of it because I was on the wrong side going into turn one. The Team KOOL Green car was fast through the twisty bits but down the straights, in the braking zone, I couldn't really take advantage of it. I just couldn't brake late enough. It was a bit frustrating. I was also trying to save fuel but in the end it didn't really count because of the late yellows."
JOHN ANDERSON, RACE STRATEGY FOR PAUL TRACY:
"I was impressed with the way things came together in testing over the winter. The personalities on the team fit, and I feel very comfortable. I'm enjoying what I'm doing; I've got a driver who gives it all. At this point in the season I'm real happy. After two races we're well up there, where we need to be to look at that championship down the road."
