Cristiano da Matta will lead a Toyota caravan in positions two-three-four and five for tomorrow's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Following da Matta's Chevron Toyota are Bruno Junqueira (Target Toyota) in third, Kenny Brack (Target Toyota) in fourth and rookie Townsend Bell (Visteon Toyota) in fifth.
Today's qualifying effort marks the first time that Toyota has qualified four cars in the top five in CART competition.
Da Matta, who missed the pole by .003 seconds, matched his career-best qualifying mark of second that he established on four other occasions. The current CART points leader earned one point already this weekend for being the fastest Friday qualifier.
Cristiano da Matta will be looking to tie the all-time CART record for consecutive victories (four) with a win tomorrow. The fourth-year Toyota pilot has registered wins at Australia (2001), Fontana (2001) and Monterrey, Mexico (2002) heading into this weekend's Toyota Grand Prix.
The three-four qualifying effort by Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Junqueira and Brack establishes a new season-best for two teammates. It's the second consecutive race that each will start in the top 10. Junqueira qualified seventh at Mexico, while Brack was eighth.
With a fifth in qualifying today, Townsend Bell establishes a new personal-Champ Car best in qualifying. The rookie driver has now qualified in the top 10 in each of the first two events this season after placing ninth in qualifying at Monterrey, Mexico.
Today's qualifying session marks the first time that a Toyota-powered car has not been the fastest in a dry session this season. A Toyota had been the fastest in eight consecutive CART on-track sessions (practice, qualifying and race).
