Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard occupy a spot in the top 10 after the first round of qualifying today for Sunday's Grand Prix of Long Beach. Kanaan toured the 1.968--mile temporary seaside street course in 1 minute, 9.194 seconds (an average speed of 102.390 mph), good for 10th-fastest on the day. Kanaan, last year's polesitter here, was fourth-fastest in this morning's opening practice session.
Practice continues Saturday morning with final qualifying set to begin at 1:45 p.m. Race time is 1 p.m. local time (4 p.m. EDT) on Sunday with a tape-delayed broadcast on ESPN set to begin at 5 p.m. EDT).
TONY KANAAN -- We had a good session this morning, but in the effort to try to improve the car, we made changes that didn't turn out to be very good. So we lost a lot of time in the qualifying session changing the car back. Then the red flag came out (for a late-session accident by Dario Franchitti) and we lost our chance to get a fast qualifying lap. That's okay. We'll be in the fast group for final qualifying. That's the place to be. There's a lot left in the car, and in me, too. I think we have a good chance of moving up on the grid.
