Team Rahal grabs third and fourth.
Vasser and Jourdain hold second row in provisional qualifying.
LONG BEACH, CA . . .Team Rahal drivers Jimmy Vasser and Michel Jourdain grabbed the third and fourth spots respectively on the provisional grid in Friday's qualifying for the Grand Prix of Long Beach.
Vasser piloted his Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola, which features Bridgestone tires, to a fast lap of 102.126 mph. The California native held the pole position but his time was clipped by Newman-Haas driver's Cristiano da Matta and Christian Fittipaldi with less than a minute remaining in the session.
Jourdain in just his second race with Team Rahal grabbed the fourth slot on the provisional grid with a fast lap of 101.869 mph in the Gigante Ford-Cosworth/Lola. Jourdain, currently fourth in the CART championship, made his Champ Car debut at Long Beach in 1996.
Qualifying will resume Saturday afternoon and will be broadcast live on Speed Channel at 4:30 PM EDT.
Jimmy Vasser (#8 Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires) - "I think I had something left in the car today. I was four-tenths quicker on my last lap and that would have been in the 68s. But I caught up to some traffic right at the end of the lap and I was toast. I'm happy with the car. Certainly there's more in it. It's tough to get that perfect lap with traffic, cold tires and everything you encounter out there. We've got a great effort here with Team Rahal for Michel [Jourdain] and myself. There's a lot of data being exchanged and everything under the tent is going very well. With the new qualifying rules I think you really only have four or five laps to get that hot lap in. Timing is everything and that's the key now in qualifying. But I'm pleased for now and we'll be ready for Saturday."
Michel Jourdain Jr. (#9 Gigante Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires) - "The car is working very good and I am so pleased with Team Rahal. Working with Jimmy [Vasser] has been important. We are running very similar setups and we talk about our cars in meetings. That means we can improve both cars as the day goes on. Our Gigante car has been fast right off the trailer. Our testing was fast down at Sebring last week and I knew we could be quick here. Saturday should be faster because the track will get better with more grip. Here at Long Beach the track always improves each day. Actually, the track didn't change as much as usual here. Maybe the clouds had something to do with that. But the track will get better I know that. Now we have to get better too."
