Most of the warm-up for this afternoon's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach was spent under the red flag. The first lap was not completed until 24 minutes into the 30 minute session.

At the start, before the first car completed a lap, Hattori hit the wall in turn 8, torn up the left side of the car, continued down the back straight and stopped in a run-off area at turn 9, leaking fluid all the way. It took some time to remove the car and clean up the mess and the session was restarted with fifteen minutes to go.

The cars went back out again and some cars managed to make it once around before the next red flag came out. Jourdain stalled in the hairpin, Hearn went off into the turn 1 run-off and Fittipaldi stopped on the track.

The session was restarted with 9 minutes to go and the first driver to complete a fast lap was Fernandez. Most of the field took to the track and the first fast drivers were Pruett and Vasser. Jourdain went off again, but the session was not stopped again. With two minutes to go, Fittipaldi, Marquez and Gordon topped the board. In the last minute, Herta, Kanaan and Montoya put in fast times. And that was it.

The final order was Kanaan, Fittipaldi, Herta, Montoya, Marquez, Castro-Neves, Gordon, Pruett, Vasser, Carpentier, Barron, Franchitti, Salles, Blundell, Gugelmin, Fernandez, Jourdain, Tracy, da Matta, Andretti, Moore, Papis, de Ferran, Jones and Garcia.
