CHAMPCAR/CART: Long Beach: Saturday quoteboard

FINAL QUALIFYING QUOTES Sebastien Bourdais ...

Sebastien Bourdais #1 McDonalds Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"I think it was a little bit of a better today for the McDonald's team. We were a little frustrated after yesterday. Obviously we had a very strong first run, then an unhappening on the second with the pit selection we had after the terrible mistake I made in Vegas. We just paid the price. You know, very costly. It was tough because we only got one lap, couldn't improve on the second run. But today was a different day. We worked really well this morning. We found some improvements. And the track came to us a little bit, too. So I thought that second qualifying, I was pretty confident after the 15 minutes, we seemed to have a nice margin. But when we put the option tires on the car, the car got completely disconnected, lost the balance, and I was really not feeling comfortable at all. So we decided to -- despite the fact that we were on pole, we didn't feel like we got everything out of it, and didn't feel like the balance was going to get there, so we switched back to the standard tires. That run really never happened. But the last lap was looking pretty good, and unfortunately I ran into some traffic."

Will Power #5 Aussie Vineyards Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"In prequalifying, I think we got a bad set of tires or something because suddenly we had really unbalanced car. Really knocked my confidence a little bit. You know, we made a lot of changes before we went out and did a qualifying run on the red tires. I wasn't sure what to expect in the car, so it took me a while to get back up to speed. You know, I got my best lap on the last lap on my first run. And then the last, the second run, there was the red flag. You know, our tires were almost up to temperature, so we were first out of pit lane. I think we were less than half a 10th off Sebastien's time, but I pushed too hard in the hairpin, I lost it all there. You know, it was a good session. We start in the front row. We already have a good points lead. So we'll be looking for a good mistake-free race tomorrow and we'll have a good think about strategy. We got the opportunity, because we got the front row yesterday, to run on some heavy fuel loads, concentrate on race setup for tomorrow. So, you know, we're in good shape."

Simon Pagenaud #15 Aussie Vineyards Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"Again, the car was really good. I've been doing a very good job in the practice this morning with Will and all the team. The car feels very good to me. I did my fastest lap on my set from yesterday, my set of tires, the red Bridgestone tires from yesterday. So I guess we did a very good performance today. I'm very proud of the Aussie Vineyards team. Just very proud of all the team and what we are doing now."

Alex Tagliani #8 LXN2 Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"I am very happy that we are going to be starting on the second row once again, however, I am a little disappointed because we had a good lap going right before Katherine (Legge) spun. We had just headed out for our second run with a fresh set of Red Bridgestone Tires, and I was on my third timed lap. I think that would have been a good lap. I don't think it could have been good enough to beat (Sebastien) Bourdais, but I think it would have put us in the top three. So we are close in the #8 LXN2/RSPORTS car, and I think that we are showing that this team can be very competitive. It is important that we are staying consistent and now we just need to gain two or three tenths in order to be on top. We are close and we will continue to work hard in closing the gap. I believe we will be there very soon."

Graham Rahal #2 Medi | Zone Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"I think that a fifth place starting spot is pretty good for the Medi | Zone team. Certainly we expected to be quicker and thought we would go quicker; that's always the goal. It didn't end up happening that way but we're happy with fifth. It's not too far from the front, let's just hope this time its not in the zone of the crashes. I would much rather start on the inside like we are so I can hug the wall here than let someone else sneak down the inside. We saw last year with (Mario) Dominguez and all these other guys that you have to be conservative here. That's kind of the goal right now. It will really be my first race. Hopefully we'll get a better start; hopefully the field will be more packed up than last race. Hopefully it will be a clean start and Tony (Cotman) can make sure that nobody is being idiotic out there and we'll make it."

Robert Doornbos #14 Muermans/Jumbo Supermarkten/Media Mall Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"My engineer told me to pit, but I missed the pit entry and ran out of fuel. It was so hot just sitting in the car on the track, it was like being in a sauna for the entire session! That was the longest twenty minutes of my life! I had a good car, and we were finally able to attack the track. Unfortunately, I then made a mistake. I'm very sorry for all the boys, as I could have turned a faster time, but I am confident we will have a good car for the race."

Justin Wilson #9 CDW Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"Today went ok for us. We made progress throughout the day, so I definitely think we have a good chance in the race. We just have to keep working hard to get a faster car that will be competitive tomorrow. The CDW crew did a fantastic job getting the #9 CDW/RSPORTS car ready for qualifying. After hitting the wall this morning, they had some work to do to repair the damage, and I want to thank them for all their efforts."

Bruno Junqueira #19 Sonny's Bar-B-Q Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone - "It was a very disappointing day for us today. We have a lot of work ahead of us before tomorrow's race. I thought we had the problems from our morning practice fixed. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for us."

Tristan Gommendy #22 Pay By Touch-Megaspiera Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"I made a mistake on my first set of tires in qualifying. The Pay By Touch MegaSpirea PKV Racing car was really good on black (primary) tires in the practice before qualification. So, my engineer proposed to me a little change on the rear for the balance with red (alternate) tires. But, I said the car is good right now and I don't want to change it. It was a mistake because on the red tires I had too much understeer (loose). Then with the second set of tires there was a lot of traffic and problems on the track (red flag) so, even thought the balance was better, I only got a few laps and could not get the most out of the car. The potential of this car is a top-four or five car, but I need to learn and practice more to get there. Now it is the race and my goal is to stay on the track like at Las Vegas. I think the first lap of the race tomorrow will be the most important. I can't make a mistake."

Neel Jani #21 Red Bull-Gulfstream

"Yesterday the Red Bull Gulfstream PKV Racing Team had a dreadful day. Today after the final practice I had a very good lap time on old tires, so I thought, cool in qualifying we can at last get back to where we are used to the top-five at least. Now, suddenly it didn't work again and we can't figure out why. The car was handling strange over the bumps. So, we are just going to have to go and rethink about what we are doing and make it better for tomorrow."

"Speedy Dan" Clarke #4 Ticketmaster/Synapse Power/The Australian Pink Floyd Show Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"It has been an immensely frustrating weekend for me so far. We kept having issues, and I feel bad for the entire crew, who worked hard all afternoon. Hopefully, we can get everything sorted tonight, and put these past two days behind us. We are making gains bit by bit. That's exactly how our weekend went at Denver last year, and we got a podium finish out of it, so we'll hope for a similar result here. Obviously, we'd like to be starting further up the grid tomorrow, but sometimes these things just happen."

Katherine Legge #11 Dale Coyne Racing Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone

"We had a few problems today with the engine electronics and the throttle sticking. We had no full throttle at all today. To qualify in eighth position for tomorrow's race is a positive after all the problems. We should improve the car before the start of the race."
