Team Rahal finished the Saturday morning practice session of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach with Max Papis on the top of the board and teammate Bryan Herta third.
The new turn two area around the fountain continued to claim victims when Dario Franchitti stuffed his car into the tires there, bringing out the red flag, and Mark Blundell tagged the left rear tire hard on the wall there. Just to be different, Helio Castro-Neves tagged the wall on the outside of the hairpin.
After the initial shakeout of the 75 minute practice session, Herta and Montoya had the top times. This continued through the relatively long red flag spent putting some tires back right after Franchitti rearranged them. With 20 minutes to Tony Kanaan cames out and put in some fast times, moving up to 4th, then 3rd. Greg Moore moved up to 6th.
With 15 minutes to go, the order was Herta, Montoya, Kanaan, Carpentier, Pruett, Moore, Fittipaldi, Papis, Franchitti, de Ferran, Gugelmin, Blundell, Andretti, Vasser, Jones and the rest.
With 10 minutes to go, the action really picked up. Papis took top time. Vasser took 9th, then 1st. P J Jones moved up to 5th, then 4th. Kanaan moved back to 3rd. Richie Hearn spun coming out of turn 5, but kept the car (and the session) going. Christian Fittipaldi took 2nd, then 1st with less than a minute to go. Then Papis took 1st. Herta put in a time for 5th, then 3rd. Pruett put in a time for 5th.
And the session was over.
The final order was Papis, Fittipaldi, Herta, Vasser, Kanaan, Pruett, Andretti, Jones, Montoya, Franchitti, Carpentier, Castro-Neves, Moore, Jourdain, Tracy, Blundell, Gugelmin, Barron, Fernandez, Gordon, da Matta, Marquez, Salles, Hearn, Hattori, Garcia.
