Andretti Tops Saturday Long Beach Practice

Long Beach (April 4, 1998) -- Michael Andretti pushed his Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford to the quickest time during Saturday morning's practice at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Andretti's speed of 111.176 miles per hour was only five-hundredths of a second slower than that of Friday's provisional pole qualifier Bryan Herta, who raced through the Southern California streets to grab the top spot in his Shell Reynard Ford. Final qualifying is set for 12:45 p.m. PT today.

The morning session saw rain come and go and teams switching back and forth between wet and dry tires. The final 10 minutes, the circuit became quite damp as the off-and-on rain became steady. Second-quickest was defending Long Beach and PPG Cup champion Alex Zanardi at 110.516 mph in his Target Reynard Honda. Herta was third-fastest at 110.177 mph and fourth was Dario Franchitti in the KOOL Reynard Honda. Gil de Ferran rounded out the top five in the Valvoline Cummins Reynard Honda at 110.068 mph.

Friday's qualifying resulted in the top 20 positions falling within a second of one another. The Ford-powered contingent led the way with the top four positions and five of the top six.
