22nd TOYOTA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH PPG Indy Car World Series Race No. 4 April 12-14, 1996

NOTES FOR MONDAY 4/8/96 by Robert Heathcote

Teo Fabi will substitute for injured driver Mark Blundell in the #21 PacWest Racing Group Reynard Ford/Cosworth for the Long Beach Grand Prix; and perhaps at Nazareth on April 28, if Blundell is still not ready to compete. Fabi has race six times at Long Beach with a best finish of 3rd place in 1995 driving for Jerry Forsythe. Fabi's announcement comes just in time to make my chart of LBGP career results for all drivers. It follows these brief notes.

Richie Hearn and John Della Penna Racing appear to be the only "one-off" entries for Long Beach, and will probably be the only team using a 1995 car. The '95 Reynard Ford/Cosworth will carry the #44 with sponsorship from Ralhps Food 4 Less markets. CART will probably allow the team to run the car with 1995-spec rear wings, undertray and sidepods, but should require the underbody exit height to be reduced six inches to match 1996 cars. 1995 front wings should be okay, but CART may ask that they be smoothed out so that they more closely resembled the butter-knife blade of the 1996 specification (to prevent tire slicing).

I found out today why the Trans-Am race has been moved to Sunday afternoon, from Saturday, as in the past: To ease traffic after the IndyCar race. Organizers and traffic coordinators are hoping a good number of fans will stay late Sunday to watch the Trans-Am race. I think most *will* stay, as most people I have talked to are very happy to have SCCA's premier series come back to The Beach.

The weather has been very nice: In the high 70's after the morning cloud layer burns off. Typical Grand Prix of Long Beach weather so bring your suntan lotion.

I dropped by the Long Beach Grand Prix ticket office Monday and was surprised to learn there are still pit passes available. The "Super Photo Ticket" gets you three days limited access to the pitlane during all IndyCar practice and qualifying sessions; and I think practice sessions for all support series and maybe some support races, too. It also includes a three-day Garage Pass.

The "Super" is not cheap, at $195 a pop but if you're a big fan and can afford to pay a little extra to be as close as possible to the cars, teams, and drivers at work, there is no other way to go. The "Super Photo Ticket" does not include a reserved grandstand seat, but it does include access to the many "Photo Towers". Be advised, these tickets are gain admittance to special restricted areas; minors and video cameras are not allowed. These tickets may be purchased at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Ticket Office at 430 East First Street (1/2 block West of Linden Ave). Phone ahead: 310-436-9953.

Also on the ticket front, if you were thinking of buying a reserved seat just for race day, you're out of luck because all the allotted one-day reserved seats are all sold out. As of Monday, you can only get reserved seating with a three-day ticket. Upper rows are are $90.00 and lower rows are $60.00. There's still some "three-day" seats available along pit road. (Note: There is no reserve seating on Friday for any of the 18 grandstands, and you can get a free ticket "coupon" for Friday at participating Texaco dealers.)

Other basic attendee info: All entry gates are in same locations as last year and you do not have to match your ticket color to the colored entry gate per the track map.
