Notes

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The initial day of practice for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach ended early for Coyne Racing-Team P.R.G. drivers Michael Krumm and Luiz Garcia Jr. thanks to different reasons.

Krumm, who is in his second FedEx CART race, drove his #19 Infineon-Dark Dog-Glashutte Lola-Ford/Cosworth, around the streets of Long Beach, recording a fast lap of 70.598 (100.345 mph). The German rookie was then forced to retire from practice 30 minutes early because of an over revving problem.

Garcia, who is battling a virus that has kept him from full strength all day, managed a fast time of 72.945 seconds, for an average speed of 97.125 mph in his Embratel-Chapeco-Dark Dog-Infineon Lola-Ford/Cosworth.

The Brazilian then pulled into the pits and ended his practice early and headed for the CART Medical Facility for a check up. He was released and said he will take part in qualifying.

Qualifying begins at 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

Quotes

"This was a tough day for me physically. I wasn't feeling very good at all and I couldn't concentrate and put together a decent run in the car. The car was not bad at all, but I had a few moments out there so we decided to end the day early. Dale (Coyne) took me to the CART Medical Facility where I had an examination. I'll take the doctor's advice and rest up for tomorrow." - Luiz Garcia Jr., Driver #21 Embratel-Chapeco-Dark Dog-Infineon Lola-Ford/Cosworth

"Needless to say, we lost some time today not only with the engine, but we lost some while trying to improve on the set up of the car. The engine sounded pretty rough, so the guys will have a look at it. As far as the course, it is a nice layout with some wide areas and a few tight turns. I'm impressed with the circuit." - Michael Krumm, Driver #19 Infineon-Dark Dog-Glashutte Lola-Ford/Cosworth.
