Race Distance: 177.12 miles (90 laps on the 1.968-mile temporary street course).
Potenza Race Tires Supplied: Bridgestone delivered 620 dry-condition and 340 wet-condition Potenza race tires for use this weekend. All were produced at the Bridgestone/Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio.
* Dry-condition tires ("slicks"): Each car receives up to seven sets of slicks (28 tires) for the race weekend, to use as its team sees fit in the practice, qualifying and race sessions. Bridgestone Motorsport engineers opted to return with the same compound/construction combination that fared so well last year at Long Beach. This specification represents the "softest" tire in Bridgestone's current Champ Car repertoire for any type circuit. The higher level of grip is necessary at Long Beach to better negotiate the changes of surface around the track and the many slow-speed turns.
* Wet-condition tires ("rains"): Bridgestone supplies each car up to four new sets of grooved rain tires per race weekend on road and street courses, as needed. In addition, teams may bring two sets of rain tires per car that were issued at a previous event but not used. Bridgestone developed a new street-course rain tire for 2003 that is available this weekend should rain occur.
Bridgestone Takes on Presenting Sponsor Status: Bridgestone joined Champ Car competition in 2002 as Official Tire Supplier to every entrant. The world's largest tire and rubber company increased its stake in 2003, becoming Presenting Sponsor of what is now known as Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford.
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Bridgestone Motorsport: "Long Beach is a marquee event in the Champ Car World Series and Bridgestone is proud to play a substantial role in this weekend's activities. In addition to our status as Presenting Sponsor and Official Tire for the Champ Car World Series, Bridgestone is the Official Tire of the Long Beach Grand Prix and we will again equip all cars in the popular Pro/Celebrity race. The Bridgestone/Firestone team has enjoyed tremendous success at Long Beach. Jimmy Vasser's victory here in 1996 on Firestone tires remains one of our most pivotal because it came against stiff tire competition at a time when not many people believed we could prevail. That win was our fourth straight to start the season and led us to the first of what are now seven consecutive championships. We're eager to see who becomes the 2003 Long Beach champ, knowing it will be Bridgestone tires that take him to victory lane."
