Unfortunate race for Alex Yoong.

Long Beach, California - Monday Apr 14, 2003 - Malaysia's Alex Yoong did not finish the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach after crashing out on lap 32 of the 90 lap race when making a move on Brazil's Mario Haberfeld at turn 1 of the famed street circuit in downtown Long Beach.

Canadian star, Paul Tracy won the race with a total time of 1h 56m 01.792s and set a record as the first driver to win three successive Champ Car races. Mexican Adrian Fernandez followed home in second 4.544s adrift with Brazil's Bruno Junqueira third a further 9s away.

Alex Yoong post race quote:

"Before my first fuel stop I had overtaken a couple of guys and was running respectable times to the midfield guys. Just before my stop on lap 28, I had overtaken Monteiro for 14th but found I had to do that again after the blotched fuel stop which required an immediate second stop to get all the fuel in. On lap 32, I made a move on the outside of Haberfeld into turn 1 but I guessed it was abit too ambitious a move as I locked up and didn't make it. It was just a case of trying too hard to make up the places lost. It had been a disappointing weekend with some problems in sorting out the car but it can't compare really with how Jourdain felt after he most unfortunate lost his certain win in the last pitstop. We'll move forward from now on."
