Manning sixth and Lavin ninth in German 500
A weekend of bests for Walker Racing rookies
Rodolfo Lavin (R), #5 Corona Competition Team Ford-Cosworth XFE-Reynard-Bridgestone
Lavin earned his best finish of the season in his first Champ Car oval race after scoring a career-best start of eighth in his #5 Corona Competition Team machine for the German 500. Lavin had to pit for two consecutive laps to examine the inside front tire after narrowly avoiding contact with Michel Jourdain and Patrick Lemarie exiting the pits on Lap 25. Lavin fell from seventh to 18th. The young Mexican worked his way back up to seventh by Lap 81 when he made his third pit stop. During that stop, a fueling difficulty cost him several seconds in the pit and ultimately dropped him a lap down to the leaders. He finished ninth earning four championship points.
"The Corona car was awesome! I could easily run with the leaders most of the time. I had a little push sometimes, but the car handled really well overall throughout the race and I have to thank the Corona Walker Racing crew for their efforts this weekend. We had a couple pit incidents that cost us a little bit, but I'm very happy with this finish."
Fast Facts: Marked his fifth Champ Car start and first Champ Car oval race, Earned a new career-best start, eighth, and finish, ninth, in German 500, Lavin turned the seventh fastest lap of the race, 36.922 (197.248 mph), on Lap 133
Darren Manning (R), #15 Ford-Cosworth XFE-Reynard-Bridgestone
Manning drove his #15 RAC Walker Racing Champ Car to a new career-best finish of sixth topping his previous best of seventh earned at the Monterrey Grand Prix. It marks his fourth consecutive top-ten finish and fifth top-ten finish in six starts. The British talent also earned a career-best start of fifth, marking the fourth consecutive race that Manning has improved his previous best qualifying effort.
"The car was really good, especially at the end of the race. I was running really competitive laps after my final pit stop. I think I did a 37.2 by myself and a 37 flat I in a tow. We broke one of the turning veins under the front wing which probably caused the massive push I had at the beginning of the race. I could run up alongside of cars, but I couldn't pass very easy. As soon as I got up along side somebody, I had to drop back behind them. I had three top gears, and I could have used only two to help me get better restarts. I lost the tow on the restarts and it was difficult to run as quick as the leaders on my own. Overall though, it's been a great weekend for the RAC Walker Racing crew."
