A broken drive shaft stopped Yoong's splendid run
Lausitz, Germany - May 11, 2003 - Alex Yoong's good run in the German 500 ended on lap 81 of the 154-lap race of the German 500 today, but this time it was due to an errant drive shaft which broke just before Yoong came in for his third pit-stop.
He was running as high as 10th with times among the top-six when his splendid run was cut short.
Yoong, however, enjoyed his first-ever outing on an oval track. "I had a lot of fun in my first oval race. On nearly every lap it's about overtaking or being overtaken. Other than the understeer after my first pitstop, which was rectified by adding more wing at the front during the second stop, the car was running fine and was well up within the top-six times," he said after the race.
"It's a great pity that my drive shaft broke just before the 3rd stop, which put an end to a good run that had us as high up as 10th. I felt the Dale Coyne Racing team could have been rewarded with another point scoring result today had it not been for the mechanical problem. This result definitely does not reflect the good work done by the team."
Sebastien Bourdais claimed a superb victory from Mario Dominguez by just 0.084s, with Michel Jourdain Jr. filling the final podium slot.
Yoong's team-mate, Joel Camathias, chalked up his fifth finish in five races when he came home 16th for the Dale Coyne Racing team.
Round 5 is another oval race which will be held at night under spotlights at the Milwaukee Mile oval in Wisconsin, on May 31, 2003.
