Potenza Race Tires Supplied: Bridgestone delivered 720 Potenza race tires for use this weekend. All were produced at the Bridgestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio. Per Champ Car World Series regulations, each team receives nine sets (36 total tires) to use throughout the practice, qualifying and race sessions. The tire specification for Las Vegas comes from the superspeedway line of Bridgestone race tires. The same specification was available at last month's LVMS open test, so every team that participated in that event is familiar with the performance tendencies of these tires. The spec is also very similar to the tires used at Germany's Eurospeedway in 2003, with the left-side tires identical and the right-side tires featuring only a minor modification.
A Stagger-ing Effect: Racing on an oval for only the second time in 2004, the Champ Cars will experience the advantageous effect of stagger in their Bridgestone Potenza tires. "Stagger," purposely constructing the right-rear tire with a slightly larger diameter than the left rear, helps the racecars turn more smoothly and naturally on ovals. For this weekend, the approximate tire stagger is 0.34 of an inch.
Bridgestone Name Up in Lights: For the second consecutive race weekend in the Champ Car World Series, Bridgestone has taken on title sponsor status for the event. The Bridgestone 400 Presented by Corona offers Bridgestone, the Official Tire of Champ Car and Presenting Sponsor of the Champ Car World Series, a prime opportunity for tremendous brand exposure in the Las Vegas market. Besides the race sponsorship, Bridgestone is offering a $10,000 award to the pole winner, has taken on naming rights to the garage area (aptly named the "Bridgestone Champ Car Paddock" this weekend) and was instrumental in coordinating the elaborate pre-race ceremonies that will include a drop-in from the "Flying ELVI" skydiving team. Bridgestone also has linked up with one of its longest-affiliated dealers, Ted Wiens Tire & Auto Centers, in a promotion centered on the race. Any fan entering the Bridgestone Champ Car Paddock receives a coupon worth $10 off selected Bridgestone tires, good for up to four tires and $40 off, at Ted Wiens locations in Las Vegas and other participating Bridgestone dealers.
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Bridgestone Motorsport: "It's another big weekend for Bridgestone and another example of why the Champ Car World Series is a great business partner for us. We're delighted to be able to give the Bridgestone brand great exposure in Las Vegas and to pair up with the truck series. We're looking forward to an electrifying Champ Car race Saturday night. There's talk of two or three racing grooves developing, so the thrills could be non-stop. The drivers must have unwavering confidence in their race tires to push their cars to the limit, lap after lap. The Bridgestone tires we're supplying are proven here and at other venues, so everyone knows they'll be able to rely on their Potenzas to deliver that trademark consistent and durable performance all weekend long."
