Laguna Seca (September 13, 1998) - Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda) topped the speed list during the morning warmup for this afternoon's Texaco/Havoline 300, feature event of the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca Raceway.

De Ferran averaged 115.296 mph (1 minute, 9.880 seconds) on his fastest lap of the 2.238-mile permanent road course. He is 10th on the starting grid for this afternoon's 16th round of the FedEx Championship Series (3 p.m. ET, live, ESPN).

Two-time FedEx Championship Series champion Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) was second at 115.230 mph (1:09.919 mph). He starts fifth this afternoon. Rookie JJ Lehto (Hogan Motor Leasing, Inc. Reynard Mercedes) was third Sunday morning at 114.490 mph (1:10.371). He qualified 11th Saturday for the best road-course start of his rookie season.

Pole-sitter Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) was fourth at 113.929 mph (1:10.718). Dario Franchitti (KOOL Reynard Honda), winner of back-to-back FedEx Championship Series events at Road America and Vancouver, was 16th at 113.181 mph (1:11.185). He starts on the outside pole this afternoon.

Defending champion Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) was 21st at 112.497 mph (1:11.618). He qualified third Saturday.
