Monterey, Calif. (September 11, 1999) - Bryan Herta assumed the pole position for Sunday's CART race at Laguna Seca Raceway after today's qualifying session was canceled due to the tragic death of rookie driver Gonzalo Rodriguez of Montevideo, Uruguay, in this morning's practice session.

In a symbolic gesture to pay respect to the family and friends of Rodriguez the green flag was waved to start this afternoon's qualifying session but the cars remained silent in the pits.

Team Penske withdrew both their cars from the weekend's competition.

The starting grid for tomorrow's race has been determined using the times from Friday's qualifying session. This is Herta's third consecutive pole position at Laguna Seca.

A moment of silence will be observed and the Uruguayan flag will be displayed for Rodriguez during Sunday's driver introductions.
