Laguna Seca (September 12, 1998) - Defending polesitter Bryan Herta recorded the fastest practice speed Saturday during the morning practice for Sunday's Texaco/Havoline 300 (3 p.m. ET, live, ESPN), featured event of the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca Raceway.

Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) averaged 117.729 miles per hour (1 minute, 8.435 seconds) during his fastest lap of the permanent road course. He was followed by FedEx Championship Series champion Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) at 117.532 mph (1:08.550). Zanardi, who clinched his second consecutive series championship last Sunday at Vancouver, made his first on-track appearance since being involved in contact with Herta following the checkered flag of Friday's morning practice session.

Following the session, Zanardi was cited for unjustifiable risk by CART Chief Steward Wally Dallenbach and excluded from provisional qualifying Friday afternoon.

Scott Pruett (Visteon Reynard Ford) was third-fastest Saturday at 116.649 mph (1:09.069), followed by Andre Ribeiro (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) at 116.611 mph (1:09.091) and Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) at 116.322 mph (1:09.263).

Final qualifying begins 12:45 p.m. ET this afternoon. Dario Franchitti (KOOL Reynard Honda), winner of two consecutive FedEx Championship Series events, earned the provisional pole Friday at 117.793 mph (1:08.398).
