Laguna Seca(September 9, 1998) -- Among current FedEx Championship Series venues, Laguna Seca Raceway is the leader in producing winners from the pole position during the 1990s. Five times this decade, the race winner at Laguna Seca has started from the pole. Michael Andretti has done it twice, in 1991 and '92. The others are Danny Sullivan (1990), Tracy ('94) and Zanardi ('96). This weekend's pole winner will be competing for a fresh Marlboro Pole Award jackpot of $25,000, including $10,000 for winning the pole position and another $15,000 should he go on to win the race. The $15,000 bonus rolls over until a victory from the pole is recorded. The jackpot begins anew after Dario Franchitti (KOOL Reynard Honda) collected a payoff of $340,000, more than twice the previous record of $160,000, for his victory last Sunday at Vancouver. Franchitti's victory marked only the third time in nine events that a victory from the pole had been registered at Vancouver. Michael Andretti did it twice, in 1991 and '92.
