Herdez-backed driver Michel Jourdain Jr. will start from the 20th position at the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey, after setting his best lap in 1.09.538 at 115.862 Mph.

Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #16, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "We went out very positive, since in the morning session we were quick. They changed the engine for qualifying and also, made a few changes in the chassis, with springs, etc. and we had a good chassis. However, during the first lap of the timed session we had a problem with the clamp of the exhaust and we lost about ten minutes curing the problem. Then, we went out and there was a red flag. Finally we did a few laps and they tires were still in the process of warm-up and finally, we ran out of fuel. The computer's reading said that we should still have fuel, but the reading was wrong. Like in Vancouver, we could qualify better but we did not. It's incredible what happens to us."

Tom Brown, Chief Engineer, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "We have been making huge improvements over the last few weeks. We have a good package, but need some luck to prove it. We ran well in the morning, but had problems with fuel in qualifying."
