Race Distance: 194.706 miles (87 laps around the 2.238-mile permanent road course).
Potenza Race Tires Supplied: Bridgestone delivered 592 dry-condition and 324 wet-condition Potenza race tires for use this weekend. All were produced at the Bridgestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio. Per CART Champ Car World Series regulations, Bridgestone brings a single dry tire specification and a single wet spec, allowing every team and driver equal footing on the racetrack. * Dry-condition tires ("slicks"): Each car receives up to seven sets of slicks (28 tires) for race weekend, to use as its team sees fit in practice, qualifying and the race. Bridgestone Motorsport engineers chose a proven tire product to utilize for the Champ Cars' visit to historic Laguna Seca. Available for use is the Potenza road course tire with the highest level of grip - i.e., Bridgestone's "softest" current road course tire. It is the same tire specification utilized last year at Laguna Seca and has been called upon already this season for the open test here in January and for the race at Brands Hatch, England, last month. * Wet-condition tires ("rains"): Bridgestone supplies each car up to four new sets of grooved rain tires per race weekend on road and street courses, as needed. In addition, teams may bring two sets of rain tires per car issued at a previous event. Since Laguna Seca is a traditional permanent road circuit, Bridgestone brought its road course rain tire for use during wet periods this weekend. This tire spec was used on all road and street circuits in 2002, but with development of a new street-course specific Bridgestone rain tire for this year, the returning tire has been designated for road courses only in '03.
Bridgestone Takes on Presenting Sponsor Status: Bridgestone entered Champ Car competition in 2002 as Official Tire Supplier to every entrant. The world's largest tire and rubber company increased its stake and profile in 2003, becoming Presenting Sponsor of what is now known as Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford. Bridgestone also has been designated the Official Tire for the Grand Prix of Monterey this weekend.
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Bridgestone Motorsport: "It's wonderful to return to scenic Laguna Seca and see the signature Bridgestone tire bridge welcoming drivers, teams and fans. It's a very visible reminder of the support we've thrown behind the series in general and this race in particular. Area Bridgestone retailers also participated in a program offering free Friday tickets and discounted Saturday admission to fans, helping generate more interest and excitement in the grand prix. Hopefully it will introduce more fans to the thrill of Champ Car racing. Everyone attending this weekend gets to see all the Champ Car drivers muscling their machines around this difficult circuit, relying on their Bridgestone Potenzas to deliver the grip and consistency whenever and wherever they need it. We believe the reliable tire specification chosen for this weekend will contribute to another highly competitive event here."
