Vasser returns to his roots at Laguna Seca

Jimmy Vasser, #12 American Spirit/Ford-Cosworth/Reynard

Vasser's History at Laguna Seca: Vasser has some very special memories of Laguna Seca. He won here in 1997 but most importantly, Vasser clinched the 1996 series championship at the scenic 2.2 mile road course. 2003 will mark his 12th start at Laguna Seca, while he has never started from the pole position; he has started in the top ten on five occasions (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2000). Vasser has recorded seven top ten finishes at his home track, four of those were top five finishes (4th 1996, 1st 1997, 5th 1998, 5th 2001) and has scored championship points in eight of 11 starts.

California Native: While Vasser was born in Canoga Park in Southern California, he grew up in the Central Coast. He is a 1983 graduate of Live Oak High School in Morgan Hills and owns and operates Jimmy Vasser Chevrolet-Toyota in Napa. Vasser currently resides in Las Vegas, but keeps a flat in San Francisco for his frequent visits to the area.

Vasser on Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway: "Returning to my home track is always the highlight of the season for me. My memories of Laguna Seca extend all the way back to my childhood. I used to go there with my dad and that track is really what sparked my interest in road racing. On top of that, some of my greatest and most accomplished memories of my career came at Laguna Seca. I won my first big Formula Ford race there in the 80's; I won an Atlantic race there in 1997. In 1996 I clinched the series Championship at Laguna Seca, that was the same year that my good friend and teammate Alex made "the pass" on (Bryan) Herta. The next year I won the race and Alex won the championship there, which was pretty cool. It is a special place with a lot of meaning for me. This year we are racing there on father's day, I always have a lot of friends and family at Laguna Seca, but this year it will be a little bit more special, hopefully, I can give my dad the trophy for fathers day."
