LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY, Monterey, California (August 31) - Activities for next weekend's Honda Grand Prix of Monterey featuring the Texaco/Havoline 300 start next Tuesday, September 8, with the Rahal's Last Ride media luncheon in San Francisco.
On Thursday, Monterey City officials and members of the media will go up against CART Champ Car drivers in the Parallel Parking Challenge presented by Firestone at the Monterey Plaza Hotel at 10:30am. The prizes are $500 contributions to the winning official's and driver's favorite charity. Immediately following will be a media luncheon. Afterwards, from 4-6pm, Mario and Michael Andretti will be pumping gas at the new Texaco station at the Crossroads in Carmel. Alex Zanardi and Jimmy Vasser will appear at the Target store in Sand City from 6-7pm.
Also, Bobby Rahal will be honored Thursday at La Gala Seca, an evening of dining and entertainment with drivers and celebrities to benefit charity. Featured is an auction for exclusive racing items such as helmets and a Champ Car nose autographed by drivers, original artwork and pace car rides. Fans really get up close and personal with their favorite racers. Tickets to the semi-formal event in the Flagroom at the raceway, from 6:30 - 10pm, are $65 per person. Friday, the Expo at the Raceway will open at 8am, and be open from 8am-5pm throughout the weekend. As usual, there will irresistible international cuisine from places like Germany, Italy and Thailand, and official race team displays. New will be the colorful Family Fun Center for kids from six to 96 that (free-of-charge from 10am-5pm) features all kinds of neat activities: Trampoline Thing, Colossal Slide, Climbing Mountain, Gladiator Joust, Obstacle Course, Speed Pitch, Econo Bounce and Theme Bounce. From 12:15-12:45pm, Toyota Atlantic drivers will sign autographs near the Firestone tire bridge in the Paddock.
Saturday in the Paddock, Champ Car drivers Alex Zanardi, Paul Tracy, Patrick Carpentier and JJ Lehto are scheduled to give autographs at the PPG Pace Car display around 4:15pm. PPG-Dayton Indy Lights drivers will give them at 2:15pm near the Indy Lights compound and Atlantic drivers will again be at the autograph tent near the Firestone Bridge from 10:30-11am.
Sunday, in addition to three races, there will be exhibition runs with cars that will be at the Visa Sports Car Championships presented by Honda on the weekend of October 23, 24, 25. Indeed, the runs may turn out to be match races between the Panoz GTR from the FIA GT Championship series and the Dollahite Racing Ferrari 333 SP raced in the World Sports Car Championship. The Barloy Canyon Rd. and South Boundary Rd. gates to the raceway will open at 7am daily.
