Motorsport.com has confirmed that J. Kirk Russell was 'terminated' by CART on Friday afternoon, 28 September, 2001. He most recently was the vice-president of competition.

One more of the "old guard" is now gone. Russell joined CART in November of 1978 as its technical director. His duties at CART have run the gamut during his tenure and have included general administrative responsibilities as well as overseeing CART's competition department. Russell has long been active in the motorsports world and has been instrumental in several advances in race car and facility safety. The double bulkhead design to protect drivers feet is one of his most notable contributions to champ car safety.

He also served in 2000, as Chief Steward for the series.

No replacement has been named.
