Tony Kanaan and his #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard picked up a half-second over Friday's provisional qualifying time but remained in the 12th position in final qualifying for Sunday's Grand Prix of Monterey. Kanaan clocked a lap of 1 minute, 8.857 seconds (an average of 117.008 mph) over the 2.238-mile Laguna Seca Raceway hillside road course. Provisional polesitter Helio Castroneves did not improve on his time from Friday but held onto the pole at 1:07.722 (118.969 mph). Race time Sunday is noon PDT (3 p.m. EDT) with a live broadcast set for ESPN.
"It was a very frustrating session because of the two late incidents on the track. We never got to use our second set of qualifying tires. That's too bad. We have a much better car than that. We were third in practice this morning, so we know we can run up front. I think we have a solid race car. We should be in good shape. We'll find out for sure in the warmup tomorrow morning."
