Tony Kanaan and his #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard capped a frustrating day with a 13th-place finish in today's Motorola 300 at Gateway International Raceway. He started sixth and worked his way up to challenge for third position by Lap 27 of a scheduled 236 laps over the 1.27-mile egg-shaped oval. On Lap 36, he was blocked by a slower car, was forced to get off the gas, and was shuffled back to 10th place over the next two laps. He fell back to 15th after the second of three rounds of pit stops on the day, and fought his way back to his 13th-place finish despite a severe lack of braking power over the last 30 laps. Juan Montoya was today's race-winner for the third time this season.
The next stop on the 20-race CART FedEx Championship Series tour is in two weeks for Round 18, the Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston (Sept. 29-Oct. 1)
"It seemed like whatever could go wrong, did go wrong today after everything seemed so promising in the early going. First, I had to get out of it when I was blocked, bad, by a slower car. And on this track, which is a serious momentum track, it takes you several laps to get back up to speed. That pretty much was the story of the day. We didn't get the greatest fuel mileage in the world today, so we couldn't run rich enough to mount any kind of a charge back to the front. Then, I lost my brakes the last part of the race. At least we brought it home in one piece."
