Tony Kanaan had to qualify his back-up #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard after an accident early in his session today damaged his primary car. Kanaan had time for only five qualifying laps in his back-up car and achieved a lap of only 1 minute, 19.834 seconds (an average of 105.790 mph) to put him at the back of the starting grid. Just four laps into the 30-minute qualifying session, Kanaan was overtaking Max Papis heading into Turn 10 when the two appeared to make contact, sending Kanaan's car into the tire wall. Following the session, Kanaan visited the CART medical staff complaining of headaches. He was then sent to Detroit Receiving Hospital for a precautionary CAT scan. Results of that examination will be reported as soon as they are received.
Meanwhile, Kanaan's teammate Alex Zanardi and the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard will start Sunday's Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix from the outside of the eighth row. Zanardi posted a fast lap 1:15.059 (112.519 mph).
Defending race-winner Helio Castroneves earned the pole in 1:13.499 (114.908 mph) today, followed by Bruno Junqueira at 1:13.581 (114.780 mph) and Gil de Ferran at 1:13.666 (114.647 mph).
Race time Sunday is 2 p.m. EDT with a live broadcast provided by ABC-TV. The Sunday-morning CART2DAY warm-up show will air at 11 a.m. EDT on ESPN2.
