Justin wraps up pre-season testing at Laguna Seca
Justin and RuSPORT had a productive two days at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca circuit in Monterey, California for their third and final pre-season Champ Car test. With only one car confirmed, RuSPORT teamed up with Rocketsports Racing to work together as a two-car effort at Laguna Seca and possibly the 2007 season.
After getting acclimatised to the new Panoz Champ Car in Sebring and Houston, this test was a chance to really dial in the #9 CDW car and get ready for the opening race of the season which is less than a month away. Justin put in 272 laps around the 2.2 mile road course and posted the 7th fastest time overall (1:06.755, 120.692 mph).
The Panoz Champ Cars were impressively quick and Justin was one of a number of drivers to beat the existing Laguna Seca Champ Car track record set by Helio Castroneves in 2000 in a Reynard Champ Car (1.07.722). Sebastien Bourdais set a new outright track record of 1:05.880 for the Newman Haas Lanigan team in the final session - faster than the Toyota F1 team on their visit to the track in 2006.
"I am very pleased with our results over the past two-days," said Justin. "We were only a few tenths away from the top of the field in the #9 CDW car, so we are quite pleased about that." He added, "I think that working with Rocketsports was a great opportunity and we all worked very well together. It was definitely an advantage to have a team-mate, especially an experienced one like Alex (Tagliani). I feel that we were both able to benefit from working together and it showed. Overall it was a very positive experience as we prepare for our first race in April."
RuSPORT are now heading back to their home base in Colorado to prepare for the season opener in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada on 8th April.
