After starting from the 23rd position, Herdez-backed driver Michel Jourdain Jr. briefly enjoyed the lead in the Marlboro 500 race. However, his joy did not last long, being forced to retire when his engine overheated. Despite retiring, the Mexican driver was placed in 11th position to take two points for his cause. Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #16, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "It's a shame. Definitely my car was the best on the track. However, during the caution flag it started to overheat and I don't know what happened to the engine. We led our last lap in the season and it's a shame that we could not finish the race. But, I am sure that with the right package the next year we will be competitive." Keith Wiggins, General Manager, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "Michel (Jourdain Jr.) and the team Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports did a good job. We had the best race that we could at the end of the year. The last two races we showed that with the right package we can do a good job for the next year."
