Herdez-backed driver Michel Jourdain Jr. retired after a contact with Alex Tagliani, at the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey.

Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #16, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "We had a good car. We were saving gas and overtaking wasn't easy. During my first pit stop there was a problem with the clutch and I lost some positions, after that I recovered a few. Then, I saw (Alex) Tagliani was having engine problems and I attempted to pass him, but he closed the door and we had contact. A steering arm was broken as result of the incident and now I am sad. We had problems during qualifying and I think our race problem comes from the fact that we did not start further front. I hope our luck will change and I am very grateful, because my Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports Team has done a great job."

Joe Ward, Team Manager, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "We ran conservative fuel strategy. During our first pit stop we had an apparent clutch problem and we lost three positions. Once on the track he (Michel Jourdain Jr.) ran competitively, until during a pass with Alex Tagliani, who had a misfire, was hit by Tagliani's car, which broke front steering arm."
