Herdez-backed driver Michel Jourdain Jr. will start from 23rd position in the Marlboro 500 race. The Mexican driver was penalized with one-timed lap less, because he exited the pit lane over the 60 Mph. speed limit. His best and only timed lap was at 227.963 Mph in 32.042 seconds.

Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #16, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "I drove all the time at full throttle during qualifying and despite running with minimum wing, we were not able to go faster. I think even if we had the chance to run the second timed-lap, the result wouldn't have been different."

Keith Wiggins, General Manager, Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports: "Obviously, I feel disappointed about the unexpected result in qualifying. The balance of the car was good. We trimmed the downforce out as much as possible with the power we had."
