Qualifying for tomorrow's 225-lap Target Grand Prix presented by Energizer took place this afternoon under cloudy skies and the threat of rain. Although the session was interrupted for almost an hour by intermittent sprinkles, all 25 drivers were able to qualify.
Michel Jourdain Jr.
"We had more understeer in the car than we wanted for the current conditions. Coming through turns three and four on my first lap, the car was really understeering and it messed me up for the start of the second lap. This track requires so much momentum to put in the best time and that really hurt us."
Jourdain continues to undergo treatment by CART Medical Center staff for a large blister on the back of his left heel - the product of grueling conditions at last week's Harrah's 500 at Michigan International Speedway. "It gives me a fair amount of pain," Jourdain reported, "but only when I'm trying to walk around. The docs have rigged up a support so that it's not bothering me in the car."
* The Target Grand Prix marks Jourdain's 92nd start in the CART FedEx Championship Series and his 89th consecutive start (beginning at Vancouver in 1996), This will be his 31st start with Herdez Bettenhausen and his third start at this event.
* Jourdain has qualified in the top-ten four times so far this season; Long Beach (7th), Nazareth (3rd), Twin Ring Motegi (7th), and Michigan (6th).
* At Round 11, the Harrah's 500 presented by Toyota at the Michigan International Speedway, Jourdain scored the first podium of his Champ Car career with a 3rd place finish.
* Jourdain currently stands 22nd in the Drivers Championship with 16 points, just 2 points shy of his 2000 season total.
Live race coverage of the Target Grand Prix will air on ABC-TV at 4:00pm (EDT) on Sunday, July 29th and will be broadcast live on the CART Radio Network. Live timing and scoring will be available online at www.cart.com.
