HOUSTON - Team KOOL Green drivers had minimal track time in today's first two practice sessions for the Grand Prix of Houston, with Paul Tracy placing 16th and Dario Franchitti 26th. The team elected to use the morning session, run on a dry track, to focus on some developmental work and completed minimal laps while continuing to work on the cars in the pits. Rain began falling shortly before the start of the afternoon session, and the TKG team chose to run only a few laps on the slick streets of Houston before parking the cars for the day.
Tracy's fast lap was 88.294 mph / 1:02.260, while Franchitti's quick time was 87.411 mph / 1:02.889. Fastest of the day was Gil de Ferran at 89.791 mph / 1:01.222. Christian Fittipaldi was second (89.522 mph / 1:01.406) and Helio Castroneves was third (89.505 mph / 1:01.418).
FedEx Champ Car drivers have a third practice session on Saturday morning from 10:00 - 11:15 a.m. The cars will be split into two groups for qualifying, with two 30-minute sessions at 1:45 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. All times are Central Daylight Time.
Sunday's 100-lap Grand Prix of Houston begins at 1:00 p.m. (CDT) with live television coverage on ESPN.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(16th with a lap-average speed of 88.294 mph / 1:02.260)
"We didn't really get too much running time today in the KOOL car. We had some problems with the shifting this morning, and we got that sorted out then it started raining this afternoon. We decided to just save the car for tomorrow and not risk doing any damage because the conditions were so slippery. We've got some development parts on the car and we didn't want to break anything on the car. But the car felt good in the rain, if it's wet on Sunday we'll be in good shape."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(26th with a lap-average speed of 87.411 mph / 1:02.889 seconds)
"It was a tough morning for us. We spent a lot of time trying to get some stuff sorted out with the various new pieces we're trying on the car this weekend. That limited the amount of time we were able to spend on the track this morning and then it rained in the afternoon. We know what we have to do to make the car faster, but we just haven't had a chance to get it all done yet. We ran some laps this afternoon and I'm pretty happy with the KOOL car, so there wasn't any sense in running around anymore in the rain."
