Castro-Neves Tops Morning Practice

Houston, TX (October 3, 1998) - Rookie Helio Castro-Neves was the fastest Saturday morning among the 28 FedEx Championship Series drivers posting practice times for Sunday's Texaco Grand Prix of Houston.

Castro-Neves (Alumax Aluminum Reynard Mercedes) averaged 90.483 miles per hour (1 minute, .754 seconds) on his quickest lap of the 1.527-mile temporary street circuit. He was followed by Adrian Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State/Labatt Reynard Ford) at 90.272 mph (1:00.896) and Dario Franchitti (KOOL Reynard Honda), at 89.946 mph (1:01.117).

Rounding out the top five were Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford), at 89.900 mph (1:01.148) and FedEx Championship Series champion Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda), at 89.706 mph (1:01.280). Provisional pole sitter Bobby Rahal, who is seeking his first pole position since 1992 at Toronto, was 25th-fastest Saturday morning at 87.701 mph (1:02.681). The top 25 drivers were covered by less than two seconds.

Final qualifying is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. ET this afternoon.
