Rahal's Last Ride To Victory Lane?
Houston,TX (September 30, 1998) -- A mere three races remain in "Rahal's Last Ride," the final of owner/driver Bobby Rahal's 17 seasons as a FedEx Championship Series driver. And if Rahal is going to add one more victory to his storied legacy before hanging up his helmet, his best opportunity may come in this weekend's inaugural Texaco Grand Prix of Houston.
That's because Rahal (Miller Lite Reynard Ford) has compiled an outstanding record of success in inaugural CART events. Included among his 24 career victories are wins in the first CART events contested at Cleveland (1982), Toronto (1986) and Detroit's Raceway on Belle Isle (1992). In addition, Rahal captured the inaugural CART event held at New Hampshire International Speedway in 1992, though that is no longer an active venue in the FedEx Championship Series.
Rahal's 1992 victory at New Hampshire helped him to his third series championship, following earlier titles won in 1986 and '87. He remains only the second driver in CART history to win three championships, tying Rick Mears (1979, '81, '82).
Later in 1992, Rahal recorded a victory at Nazareth Speedway, which stands as his most recent in the FedEx Championship Series. He is pleased to have the opportunity to make his mark in Houston before concluding his driving career.
"Texas is a market we've coveted for a long time," Rahal said. "We are fortunate to have a lot of loyal fans in that area of the country, and it will be nice to be able to race in front of them before I hang it up. This event is also of keen importance to our sponsors, many of whom have major operations and sizable customer bases there. I think it's going to be a great marriage for the city, the state and the series."
